October "Spirit" NewsletterFrom Bishop Shelley Bryan Wee “Sometimes it’s boring. Sometimes it’s thrilling. Sometimes it makes me cry.” (Quote from “The Wonderful Ordinariness of Congregational Life” by Cheryl Fullerton, Christian Century, March 2022) Recently I was thinking about church. (Full disclosure … I think about church quite a bit.) But, in particular, I was thinking about the rhythm of church life. And I think the above quote from Cheryl Fullerton sums it up pretty nicely. Blessing of the PetsSunday, October 8, 2023 October 4 is the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi. St. Francis (1182-1226) was a monk who founded the contemporary order of Franciscans. He was known for his vow of poverty and his special connection to animals, among many other things. On Sunday, October 8, at the beginning of the worship service, we will celebrate Saint Francis of Assisi with a blessing of the animals. Please bring your fish, caged animals, well-behaved dogs or cats, or pictures of animals that you want to have blessed.

Stewardship & FinanceThe Security Myth Helen Keller said, “Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature. Nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure or nothing.” [John C. Maxwell, The Confidence That Convinces, Audio Tape] Many people who withhold their wholehearted support from God’s work are victims of that “superstition of security” to which Helen Keller referred. They somehow failed to learn that no amount of money makes us totally secure from the painful experiences that life flings against our windshields without the slightest warning. What happens when we try to create our own security blankets by avoiding the risk of being generous? Our selfishness costs more than money. It robs us of a spiritual relationship with God. Self-giving does not bring us total security. Nothing does that. Being alive puts us at risk in a thousand ways. But generously giving our money to God’s purposes gives us a sense of meaning and purpose as we work with other people in God’s great causes. That is a far greater reward than anything we can obtain by striving for the myth of security. Finance Update Through August Beginning Balance (6,837) Income (Deficit) (6,717) |
