Where Does the Time Go!?- Tuesday, October 31, 2023 You miss four weeks because of knee replacement surgery, then after a few weeks back, BAM, you’re in November. You know, November, the second to the last month of the year! How time flies…. You might think I’m over-reacting, but for pastors, and specifically a pastor here at Central, November begins one of the busiest times of the year. First, let’s talk about worship. The very long season of Pentecost draws to a close this month. So not only will we celebrate All Saints Sunday on November 5, but also the beginning of the season of Advent and the Hanging of the Greens on November 26. You can read more about worship in November in the November Worship Schedule article. For more infomation visit: http://centrallutheran132.tithelysetup.com/blog/where-does-the-time-go

November "Spirit" NewsletterFrom Bishop Shelley Bryan Wee In the song Amazing Grace we sing, “I once was lost but now I’m found.” Because my job sometimes involves travel, there are times when I am wandering unfamiliar airports – trying to find my flight, trying to find edible food, trying to find a place to charge my phone, trying to find a place where there isn’t a cacophony of sound and crowds of people. And sometimes at airports I also experience a feeling like a disconnection from my “self.” Sometimes I am wandering the airport trying to find my “self.” Strangely, there are moments at airports where I get this feeling as though I am unmoored from what connects me to other people. Honestly, I don’t know if this is something only I experience or if others feel the same way. For more infomation visit: http://centrallutheran132.tithelysetup.com/news/november-spirit-newsletter

November Worship Schedule
We have reached the end, but a new beginning lies just ahead. During the month of November, we conclude the longest season of our church year, Pentecost, which also brings us to the close of the church year and begins the new church year with the season of Advent, the season of anticipation and preparation for the coming of Christ. November 5 is All Saints Sunday in which we remember and give thanks to God for both the newly baptized and the faithful dead whom God has welcomed into eternal life. On November 26, we begin the season of Advent. We are moving Advent forward one week, because Christmas Eve falls on a Sunday this year. This will allow us to have four full weeks of Advent. (Please do not report us to the Liturgical Police!) Once again this year, worship on the First Sunday in Advent will be the Hanging of the Greens, during which the congregation participates in decorating the sanctuary for the season. Below please find the Scripture reading for November.

Temperature in the Sanctuary
As we move into the winter months, we will no doubt once again experience colder than desired temperatures during Sunday worship. Here’s what’s being done. First, the heat in the sanctuary is turned up from 56 degrees to 68 degrees beginning at 3:00 am, eight hours before worship. Second, the boiler has recently been serviced to ensure it is running at its peak capacity. It has been said that it didn’t used to be so cold in the sanctuary. That is no doubt true, but keep in mind that even though the boiler is working at its best now, that doesn’t mean it didn’t used to work better. The other factor is changes in temperatures over the years. As a quick comparison, the average temperature ten years ago, October through March, 2012-2013, was 47 degrees. The average temperature these same months in 2022-2023 was 41 degrees. That six-degree drop may not seem very significant, but for our heating system, attempting to heat a large room with high ceilings, raising the temp by six degrees is a challenge. It is said, information is power. In this case it would be nice if information was warmth. Unfortunately, it isn’t. |

Stewardship & FinanceHolding onto the Best “Some two hundred years ago, the French educator Alexis de Tocquesville came to America to study our newly independent republic. In Democracy in America he pointed to elements of colonial life that still describe Americans today: ‘I have seen the freest and best educated of men in circumstances the happiest to be found in the world. Yet it seemed to me that a cloud habitually hung on their brow and they seemed serious and almost sad in their pleasures. They never stop thinking of the good things they have not got. They clutch everything and hold nothing fast.’ “We have grown more knowledgeable and secure over the last two hundred years, but…The forces that hammer at us have turned us into a nation of seekers. Part of our search has been prompted by a sense that much of our lives is empty, confusing, monotonous, unrewarding. We search for meaning and inspiration, for a workable formula that can lead us to a joyful, contented, satisfying existence.” [Give to Live, Douglas M. Lawson] The answer is so obvious that we can fail to see it. Real meaning in life does not come from getting things but from giving something.
