July & August "Spirit" NewsletterFrom Bishop Shelley Bryan Wee As I write this, I am still re-living a beautiful experience that I had last weekend. Five of my friends and I drove to the Gorge Amphitheatre and we saw Joni Mitchell in concert. For some of you, this might be interesting, for others, you might not even know who Joni Mitchell is. For me, the time was filled with joy, laughter, tears, friendship, and community … not to mention amazing music and storytelling. Thank You!from Lutheran World Relief Dear Friends, Thank you for your recent gift of $2,760 to Lutheran World Relief given through the Northwest Washington Synod of the ELCA. I'd like to share a story with you about how your support makes a real difference. Guisela is a single mother living with her two daughters in the remote hills of western Guatemala. Without a regular source of income or the knowledge to work the dry, lifeless land, she struggled to provide a daily meal for her children. She made long daily treks to fetch clean water for her family, hauling heavy containers back up steep terrain to her home. This time-consuming effort left little time for gardening, and with little farming know-how, she often paid the high cost of transportation to buy vegetables for her children at the nearest market. Since job prospects for women in this area are few and far between, earning money was difficult. The cycle of poverty seemed impossible for Guisela to break. But your love changed everything. Your generosity is delivering seeds, tools and mentorship. Because of you, Guisela has learned to farm and now has an abundance of healthy and nutritious food to offer her growing children. Thank you for your generosity! We are proud to carry your love - and God's love - to the places it's needed most... until your love reaches every neighbor. Warm Regards, Ambassador Daniel V. Stewardship & FinanceWhich God Shall We Elect? Loren Mead says he often asks this question in many church audiences across America: “Are you rich?” “The usual audience response is denial. ‘Raise your hand if you are rich.’ Most hands stay down, and only slowly and reluctantly, one by one they go up. Some refuse to participate. “Objectively the question should be easy to answer. I have never asked the question in any audience in which every person present is not rich. Some are absurdly rich in comparison to 99 percent of those in the world. And others, just by being Americans, are probably better off than 95 percent of the world’s population. “You see, wealth is the natural condition of almost all North Americans. “Why do we work so hard to hide the fact that we are rich? Why hide it even from ourselves? Why does our wealth embarrass us?” “Somewhere deep inside us is a place that cannot come to terms with what it means to be what we are. This is a spiritual question, and it is the one spiritual question all Americans share. It may be the one that most threatens us.” [Financial Meltdown in the Mainline. Loren B. Mead] In the deep places of our souls, we know that Jesus was right when he said, “No one can serve two masters; for a slave will either hate the one and love the other, or be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth” (Matthew 6:24). In each of our lives, two candidates are running for election as president. Each day of each week, each of us must decide which god to elect. The weekly offering in our worship service helps us to make the right choice.
